Whether it's learning to fly, obtaining an advanced certificate or rating, or working to become an A&P, avionics specialist, or other maintenance professional, financing the training can be difficult. At the beginning of each month, AOPA will highlight scholarships from various segments of the aviation industry to make you aware of opportunities for financial help.
Scholarship applications have opened for rotary-wing commercial pilots and maintenance technicians, students seeking careers in the aircraft electronics and aviation maintenance industry, women in aviation maintenance, and Young Eagles.
Scholarship opportunities
Helicopter Foundation International—In an effort to bolster the ranks of rotary-wing commercial pilots and maintenance technicians, Helicopter Foundation International is offering several scholarships. The application window closes Nov. 30.
AEA Educational Foundation—The AEA Educational Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million to students seeking careers in the aircraft electronics and aviation maintenance industry. Numerous scholarships are available ranging from $1,000 to more than $35,000, covering maintenance and avionics. The deadline to apply is Feb. 15, 2014.
Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance—Some of the scholarship and award programs for 2014 include the Aviation Student Entrepreneur Scholarship, Delta Air Lines 757 Initial Training and Principles of Troubleshooting scholarships, Rice Family Helping Hand Scholarships, and the Taking it to the Sky Scholarship. Copperstate Fly-In Inc.—Applications for scholarships to the 2014 Air Academy in Oshkosh, Wis., are open. Candidates must be 14 to 18 years of age, a Young Eagles participant and member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, an Arizona resident, available for travel to the requested session, and available to attend the Copperstate Fly-In in October to speak about their experience at EAA AirVenture. The deadline is Jan. 31, 2014.
Scholarship winner
Owen Woodland was named the winner of the sixth annual Alan H. Conklin Business Aviation Management scholarship at the recent National Business Aviation Association convention Oct. 22 through 24. Woodland is a junior at Iowa's University of Dubuque, where he is majoring in aviation management with a minor in flight operations and pursuing a second degree in business administration. The $5,000 scholarship honors Alan H. Conklin, founder of Conklin & de Decker.
