Question of the week: Precision instrument approach

Question: During an instrument rating practical test, the applicant must demonstrate at least one precision instrument approach. Can any WAAS GPS approaches be used to meet the precision approach requirement?

Answer: Yes. An LPV (localizer performance with vertical navigation) approach may be used to demonstrate a precision approach provided the decision altitude (DA) is equal to or less than 300 feet height above touchdown (HAT). Otherwise, an LPV approach may be used only to demonstrate a nonprecision approach. (Source: Instrument Rating Practical Test Standards)
