Rick Thomas, a psychology professor at Georgia Tech, is conducting an Internet-based experiment to determine how well different types of weather products enable pilots to predict thunderstorm encounters. Another 300 volunteers nationwide are needed before the study concludes on Aug. 31.
After completing a consent form and demographic questionnaire, participants will be asked to look at a series of images of possible flight paths and radar imagery and decide whether each route would come within 20 miles of an active cell. They will also be asked how confident they feel about each assessment. The process is expected to take about one hour.
All certificated fixed-wing pilots and active students who are at least 18 years old are eligible. The study will close early if it reaches the required number of participants before that date. Go online to join (or just learn more).
