Nova Southeastern to offer $878,000 in scholarships

A new scholarship program administered by Nova Southeastern University will award nearly $1 million to 12 students every 18 months for flight training, the university announced Jan. 13.

The scholarships—$73,000 per student, for a total of $878,000 every 18 months—are provided by American Flyers and will cover the cost of flight training for Nova Southeastern University aviation students. While Nova Southeastern’s campus is in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, students may also take online NSU courses and complete flight training at one of American Flyers’ other locations: Morristown, New Jersey; DuPage, Illinois; Santa Monica, California; or Dallas or Houston, Texas.

“For those individuals interested in getting a four year degree—and the opportunity to earn all flight certifications—this scholarship could mean all the difference in the world,” said Kimberly Durham, dean of NSU’s Institute for the Study of Human Services, Health and Justice, in a media release. “It could be the difference between following their dream or having to pursue another career because of affordability.”

To qualify for the scholarship, participants must be admitted as undergraduate students at NSU, successfully complete a 16-week practicum at American Flyers, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and provide a 1,000-word essay on why they are interested in the program and why they should be granted a scholarship. In NSU’s degree program, which is entering its third year, students may earn a bachelor’s degree in human services administration, with an emphasis on human factors in aviation. The school estimates the total cost of the four-year degree program, including pilot training, is close to $160,000.
