Hartzell Propeller is developing a five-blade swept-design prop for the Piper Meridian and M500, similar to what the company supplies to the TBM900. If all goes well, they are planning on a shorter takeoff distance, better climb, and marginally better cruise performance. The design will then be expanded to the Piper M600, now in development.
The new prop will be 15 pounds lighter than the current offering, thanks to its carbon fiber construction. Using a steel beam core, Hartzell says its carbon fiber design adds considerable strength and field dressing capabilities compared to an aluminum design.
On the engine component side, Hartzell has developed a number of new alternators for both OEM and aftermarket customers. The C28-50 24V is approved on the Continental IO-360-AF and is being used on the Flight Design C4. There are two new belt-driven models for Robinson helicopters, in both 12V and 24V versions. Cessna owners also will have the option of a Hartzell PMA replacement with the ASG series that replace Ford-style alternators.
