Air racing revs up in 2015

If you intend to enter the 2015 Air Race Classic, you’d better send in your registration: The women’s cross-country air race has 47 registered teams and only eight places left to fill.

The 2015 event kicks off June 22 at Stafford Regional Airport (RMN) in Virginia, and concludes June 25 at H L Sonny Callahan Airport (CQF) in Fairhope, Alabama. Stops include Hickory Regional Airport (HKY) in North Carolina; Joseph A. Hardy Connellsville Airport (VVS) in Connellsville, Pennsylvania; Clark Regional Airport (JVY) in Jeffersonville, Indiana; Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO), Kalamazoo, Michigan; Lawrenceville-Vincennes International Airport (LWV), Lawrenceville, Illinois; Kirksville Regional Airport in Missouri (IRK); Everett-Stewart Regional Airport(UCY) in Union City, Tennessee; and Northeast Alabama Regional Airport (GAD) in Gadsden, Alabama.

Registration closes on April 1. For complete information on how to participate or to sign on as a volunteer, see the website.

Meanwhile, the Sport Air Racing League—an organization that promotes “racing for the rest of us”—is kicking off its 2015 calendar with a one-day event on March 21 at North Texas Regional Airport (GYI) in Sherman/Denison, Texas, that is open to all fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft. Though registration for that event is closed, upcoming events include the Bob Axsom Memorial Air Race on April 11, launching from Taylor Municipal Airport in Taylor, Texas (T74).

On April 20, the Sport Air Racing League will host the 400-nautical mile Race to the Sun, launching from Anderson Regional Airport (AND) in Anderson, South Carolina, and concluding at Winter Haven's Gilbert Field (GIF), Winter Haven, Florida. The registration deadline for this event is March 31.
