An air traffic control tower at Houston Executive Airport has been up and running since October 2014, though the airspace remains Class G. That may be changing. AOPA members are encouraged to join AOPA Central Southwest Regional Manager Yasmina Platt at a Dec. 15 meeting hosted by the FAA in Katy, Texas, on the proposed transition to Class D for the airspace surrounding Houston Executive. The 7 p.m. meeting at the Katy ISD Educational Support Complex (6301 Stadium Lane) will offer pilots an opportunity to weigh in and learn details of the proposal.
The Class D airspace would extend 4 nautical miles from TME, excluding a wedge-shaped cutout to allow operations at nearby Sport Flyers Airport to continue without being required to establish ATC communications.
The proposed Class D would extend from the surface to 2,500 feet msl, effective during the tower’s operating hours (6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Central Time), reverting to Class E when the tower is closed.
The meeting will include an FAA-guided discussion on airspace design, with an opportunity for questions and comments from attendees.
