Retrofit AOAs available for MU-2s

Owners of the Mitsubishi MU-2 turboprop twin can now retrofit their airplanes with an angle of attack (AOA) system. The FAA has approved the new system, which was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America in conjunction with Alpha Systems of Ramsey, Minnesota.

“We were pleased to partner with them on this installation,” said Mark Korin, CEO of Alpha Systems. “This system will provide visual and audio indications of angle of attack for all approach and departure phases of flight.”

The system is customized to provide AOA indications for approach and landing at all MU-2 flap settings. Indicators include a glareshield-mounted scale and an audio warning when AOA is too high.

Installation kits are available for $6,350 from the MU-2 Parts Center and include all necessary components. Labor to install the components should run 40 hours, according to officials. Initially, only the five U.S. Mitsubishi-authorized service centers will be able to do the installations.
