Fly-Outs: World Aerospace Museum

An unassuming hangar at Quincy Regional-Baldwin Field (UIN) in Quincy, Illinois, is home to the World Aerospace Museum. The beige hangar blends with the others that line the south edge of the airport. A sign and the two weather-worn MiG–29s parked on the ramp are the only clues as to what the building contains.

Happy Birthday

The AOPA 2012 Sweepstakes "Tougher Than a Tornado" Husky turns one year old this month. But instead of a birthday cake and a party, your sweepstakes airplane got its first annual inspection.

ISA and Cruise Planning

Jet pilots quickly learn that when it comes to cruise planning, higher is almost always better. Ignoring a very small increase in engine efficiency at high altitude, jets cruise at an indicated airspeed that is solely a function of fuel flow.

Fly Well

For many, "England" and "fantastic food" should never appear in the same sentence. As a native, I dispute this egregious mischaracterization—there's darn good nosh to be had in the land of my birth. Granted, steak and kidney pie isn't to everyone's liking, but I am a fan and encourage you to sample this delicacy. It tastes great and will provide new respect for humble kidneys, whether wrapped in pastry or not. As more than 10 percent of Americans harbor kidney disease, please read on about this crafty killer.

Letters

Mike Collins touched my heart with his article "Honoring the Tuskegee Airmen" (December 2011 AOPA Pilot). Lt. Col. William Holloman III of the famed 332nd Fighter Group was a dear friend and passed away in 2010. Bill was a national treasure. Prior to his passing, he was looking forward to climbing back into a Stearman.

As the gear thunks into the wheel wells I crank the old Bonanza onto left crosswind—a bit more aggressively than usual, just because it feels right.
