visited overnight 9/27/12 there are three tie downs now with ropes. runway is great compared to before the rehab. Marginal Verizon service standing near the approach end of 20. Pax approach handled me even though Washington Center is often listed as controlling. Love visiting here--- thank The Lord developers have not found this place and it unique culture and pristine beaches....

Visited 9/13/2012. Used Patuxent Approach for flight following. Military area was active above 3,500 with drones. No cell service on island. FBO was closed so I used the land line at Four Brothers carryout in town to close my flight plan. Put my $10 landing/tie down fee in the yellow honor box by FBO. Very friendly natives ready to please. Ate crab cake, homemade lemonade, and roof beer float at Four Bros. Rented a bike at FB for $4/hr. and rode every inch of path. Great photos are everywhere you look. Found beautiful beach beyond the displaced threshold. This is a quaint working town of commercial fishermen with 3 tour boats per day from the mainland. Don't expect splendour and you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to go back.

Fun place to fly in. Only detail to add to the other reviews is that there are no tie-down ropes (that I could see) but there are some chocks hanging on the fence. Played chicken (ha!) with the birds on take off, but they moved first. Wind was dead calm so I came in on 02 (roll straight into parking), then took off from 20, so didn't have to do any back-taxiing. There were three other planes there, and we met some helicopter guys in flight suits who landed as we arrived. The had flown their helicopter from Andrews for lunch. Otherwise, very quiet there. About a 10 (at most) minute walk to the restaurants. The museum is well done and worth a visit. You should go and see Tangier island before the whole place washes out to sea. :(

We ate dinner at the Chesapeake House today It was great as usual with lots of food. Crabcakes, Clam patties, Ham, apple sauce, corn pudding, beets, greenbeens, homemade coleslaw, potato salad, and pound cake. You can call for a reservation 757-891-2331. you can stay over night or just for dinner. Lorraine's sandwhich shop is always open. and Spanky's ice cream shop will be open next week. The Fisherman's Corner will also be open. Get here early and visit the Museum It is worth the trip. email the ASN for additional information.

Bring 10 bucks for the landing fee. RIGHT pattern for Runway 2. Two restricted airspace areas west and north of the Island. Use flight following and check en route if restricted areas are cold for direct routing. Runway rehabilitation is excellent - the midfield speed bump is gone. The area behind the displaced threshold is fair - useable for takeoff. I flew from the west @7500 feet, spiraled down over the area east of the island and landed Runway 2. The airport management works from a dilapidated trailer. Bathroom is nasty. My female passenger did not like it at all. Folks are friendly, but the immediate area around the airport is obviously economically depressed. http://www.tangierisland-va.com

Had a great visit to Tangier Island early August, 2010. Beautiful summer day, landed on the new runway with no issues, and parked near the gate. Landing fee is $10 but given the remote location, the enjoyable walk-around, and adventure of going offshore, the fee does not seem disproportionate to me. Had lunch in town, walked the length of the Island, and found everyone to be cheerful and welcoming. Probably a joy to visit in the fall. We'll be back. One point for the airport minders - a day of work straightening up outside the gate would work wonders - pulling out the old wrecks and generally tiding up. A little shine would go a long way in making a good first impression.

Be sure to check out the Museum which is surpisingly informative and well done. Don't forget to listen to the accent too... supposedly unchanged from the original English settlers in the 1680's. We found the people warm and friendly and happy for visitors. ATC communication is required due to the various restricted airpace to the north and west.

Flew into Tangier for an early spring visit. The first thing that strikes you is the smallness of the place, probably no more than a mile in each direction. The newly paved runway is inviting from the air, however. Once on the ground be prepared for a $10 landing fee that is stuffed into a box by the edge of the airport. The immediate area is kind of shabby, so take a walk over the bridge and stroll up and down Main Street. There seem to be cemeteries and stray cats at every turn.
