Bob Marshall Wilderness, Chinese Wall Scenic Fly-Out & Private Stonehenge Air Museum Tour

Friday, June 15, 2018

Cost: Free

Experience the beauty of the Montana back country on this scenic fly-out. You will be flying over the Chinese Wall, a limestone spine averaging about 1,000 feet tall and stretching unbroken for a dozen miles. The massive curtain of rockface marks the Continental Divide and borders the Rocky Mountains in Montana.

You will also fly over the 1.5 million-acre Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, the third largest in the lower 48 states. Before stopping at Kalispell City (S27) for a quick break, you will see “Montana’s Crown Jewel,” Schafer Meadows airstrip. Schafer Meadows is the last airstrip within the wilderness boundaries in the state of Montana.

After the group’s final briefing (and a quick leg stretch) at Kalispell City, you will depart as a group for Crystal Lakes (01MT) private air strip and get a tour of the private Stonehenge Air Museum, the home of over two dozen vintage aircraft including the world’s only airworthy Mk 47 Seafire!

Questions? Please contact Art Dykstra at [email protected].

No meals will be provided, and the Stonehenge tour will not be over until 12:30 p.m.  Please bring any required food/beverage.

Seeley Lake Fly-Out

Saturday, June 16, 2018

Cost: $20 RAF Potato Bake; $10 Pancake Breakfast

Join the Recreational Aviation Foundation for a fly-out to Seeley Lake (23S) for a potato bake, and if you're feeling exceptionally adventurous, camp out and stick around for the Seeley Lake Aviation Foundation pancake breakfast the next morning. For $20 per person, you'll get the traditional RAF potato bake, with all the fixin's, half a sandwich from Lindey's Prime Steak House, and water. Beer available for cash purchase.

If you plan to stick around until Sunday morning, $10 will get you pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, and water, to help support the Seeley Lake Aviation Foundation.

Two Ways to Get There!

1. Fly! Plan your route to 23S.  When you land, CTAF (122.9) personnel will be on the ground with radios and "Follow Me" vehicles to assist with parking. Because Seeley Lake is unlighted, be sure to arrive before 9:00 p.m.; after that, the airfield will be closed, no exceptions! Bring your own chocks or tie-downs with ground anchors.

2. Drive! From Missoula, take I-90E toward MT-200E. Take MT-200E and MT-83N to Locust Lane in Seeley Lake. Locust Lane will take you the 1.8 miles to the airport, then park at the end of the road.

There are 4 campsites on-field, but camping is permitted anywhere on the airstrip (except for the runway, of course). Outhouse and portable toilets will be set up with a hand washing station. Tables and chairs will be available for mealtimes, but you may want to bring your own just in case. Best of all, it's FREE!

Visit the iconic Steven Spielberg movie set of “Always,” a love story about an aerial firefighter being mentored by the spirit of a firefighting pilot killed in a daring maneuver to save a fellow pilot.

After touring the movie set, depart on a short 30-minute flight to Sandpoint airport to tour the Quest Aircraft facility. Get up close and personal with “sport utility vehicles with wings.” These amazing aircraft produced to bring services and heavy supplies to the most remote regions on the planet with their short takeoff and landing capabilities.

After the tour, feel free to spend some time at Sandpoint and grab some lunch or head to your next destination.

Questions? Please contact Art Dykstra at [email protected].

Tours of the “Always” movie set and the Quest Factory are open only to U.S. citizens. Proof of U.S. citizenship required.
