As fall approaches, many pilots start thinking about brushing up on their night flying currency. But being current is not the same as being proficient. So, what’s the key to flying safely after sundown?

Most pilots agree that flying after dark offers some of the best conditions and memorable experiences: smooth air, better aircraft performance, and stunning visibility. But on the other hand, flying at night can expose pilots and their aircraft to tricky situations—especially when there is little or no moonlight, that tends to complicate distinguishing clouds and terrain, identifying the proper runway, and landing in the dark. In addition, night flying limits the options available during an emergency.

The AOPA Air Safety Institute’s new in-person fall seminar looks at night flying from a risk management perspective. Using decades of accident data, Fly By Night identifies common problems and recommends the best ways to avoid them. Along the way, ASI’s expert seminar presenters enjoy engaging with the audience as they talk about some of the important aspects of flying at night. For example, your club members will get a refresher on pilot and aircraft requirements, and the unique flight planning considerations that come along with a night flight. In addition, seminar leaders discuss topics and situations that can take a pilot by surprise and also how to prevent such gotchas.

Invite your club to polish their night flying skills with ASI’s free 90-minute Fly By Night seminar this fall. Find your favorite location in the seminar schedule online. Symbols next to the locations identify whether the seminar is held at an aviation themed location, at an airport or both. Your club members will experience learning through shared fun and camaraderie – which is one of the huge upsides of club membership.
