Funding for Oklahoma's regional airports in the works

Regional airports in Oklahoma could be eligible for $40 million in state funding for improvements such as building or repairing hangars and terminals, and examining approaches. House Bill 2082 [ download] authorizes the Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission to award grants to 49 airports. AOPA wrote the House Energy and Technology Committee this week to express its support for the bill and request that, in the future, the grant money be extended to smaller district and community airports. AOPA Southwest Regional Representative Shelly Lesikar attended a hearing before the House energy and technology subcommittee on aerospace Tuesday and discussed the association's support with the committee members and bill sponsor - the subcommittee chair - Rep. Mike Jackson. "These 49 airports are host to two-thirds of the single-engine aircraft based in the state," said Lesikar, adding that the move is an important first step in improving access to general aviation across Oklahoma.
