June 5, 2004 - Instrument-rated pilots began arriving before 7 a.m. today, hoping to get a jump on the 14th annual AOPA Fly-In and Open House. Despite solid IFR during the early morning, the radar loop paints a more hopeful picture for later in the day. And there's plenty to do for those who choose to drive in instead of fly in.
Early this morning, AOPA staff and Frederick Municipal Airport personnel were putting the finishing touches on the static display area, pushing the final few aircraft into position. Vendors were setting up under the big-top tent, and AOPA staff members were preparing to welcome members, pilots, and other aviation enthusiasts to AOPA's headquarters.
Eleven hours of seminars are scheduled for this year's event, including a Q&A session with AOPA President Phil Boyer, the AOPA Air Safety Foundation's acclaimed "Single-Pilot IFR" seminar, a session on aircraft ownership, another on legal issues, and, of course, Rod Machado's popular "Laugh and Learn" seminar.
