June 3, 2004 - Pilots planning to fly to Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) for AOPA's 14th annual Fly-In and Open House on Saturday, June 5, need to keep a few things in mind. First, if the weather is good (and early indications are that it will be), expect FDK to be an extremely high traffic area. "We've had nearly 900 aircraft fly in for the one-day event," said AOPA Vice President of Aviation Services Woody Cahall. "Pilots may want to consider coming in on Friday to take advantage of normal, everyday operations here."

[Arrival procedures are available online.]

The FAA is establishing a temporary tower for Frederick Municipal Airport. It will be operational from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday. Pilots will need to be familiar with arrival procedures and tower frequencies.

FDK is located only 15 nm from prohibited area P-40, so check notams just before heading to the Fly-In to make sure it hasn't been expanded.

Once on the ground, pay special attention to AOPA staff members who will be marshaling and parking aircraft. Pilots will need to provide their own tiedowns. And don't forget to close flight plans. Leesburg FSS personnel will be on site at AOPA headquarters.

Then ... have fun!

There will be some three dozen aircraft on static display (including the AOPA Win-A-Twin Sweepstakes grand prize, a better-than-new 1965 Piper Twin Comanche) in front of the AOPA headquarters building and more than 100 vendor exhibits under the big-top tent behind the building. There are 11 hours of seminars available, including a Q&A session with AOPA President Phil Boyer and Rod Machado's always-popular "Hangar Flying" session.

Local vendors will have a variety of food and drink available for sale.

The 14th annual AOPA Fly-In and Open House is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 5. For those who prefer not to fly in, driving directions are available online.
