An interactive map of aviation events helps pilots—and enthusiasts—find destinations with aviation appeal using SocialFlight.
Where to go, what to do? It’s a CAVU day, and the tanks are topped off, but the same old $100 hamburger just doesn’t seem to cut it.
SocialFlight has developed a free app for Apple and Android platforms that can help answer that question, perhaps with something a little out of the ordinary. Linking a database of thousands of aviation events—fly-ins, pancake breakfasts, airshows, and more—with a social networking tool that allows pilots to swap hangar stories and share photos, the application features interactive maps and a chat program to help pilots and aviation enthusiasts develop an itinerary.
"As pilots, we’re constantly on the lookout for new places to fly and fun things to do. SocialFlight maps out all of the events and motivates us to get out there and enjoy them. It’s the first app I’ve seen that actually promotes general aviation and fosters our community,” said Rob Holland, world-renowned aerobatic performer and part of the SocialFlight beta test group, in a news release. “SocialFlight is intuitive, user-friendly, and will really energize GA flying by answering the age old question: Where am I going to fly today?"
The company is offering another incentive: Users registered by Sept. 30 will be automatically entered in a drawing to win an Apple iPad. Details are available on the company website.
The program also includes tools allowing clubs and other organizations to create or expand their online connections.
