Developers of five flight planning apps have sent in updates covering upgrades and expanded features. These are not endorsements of any app.
Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck VFR for iPad (free in iTunes, but $49 for an annual subscription)—The new version of the app includes expansion of coverage in Europe to Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. It also now offers interactive airspace warnings, notam pinning functionality, and enhanced track vector features that allow users to create personalized displays.
iFly GPS (free in iTunes and Google Play, but subscription required)—This smartphone and tablet app is now available on the Android platform. Features include moving map navigation, flight planning, terrain alerts, information on public and private airports, and ADS-B weather and traffic.
iFlightPlanner 2.0 for iPad (free in iTunes; free, premium, and premium business subscriptions available)—Users of the free version of this app have access to features including cloud-based synching of data, industry news, airport information, notams, and fuel prices. Premium and premium business customers get access to additional features including flight planning tools, certified weather briefs, a weight-and-balance calculator, flight plan filing, and a flight data recorder.
FltPlanGo (free in iTunes)—FltPlanGo is now integrated with Laminar Research's X-Plane 10 personal flight simulator. Users will now have the ability to practice at their own pace on the ground using FltPlanGo for iPad, where they have access to fly routes, obtain up-to-date airport information and terminal procedures, and view their position and flight data on FltPlanGo maps, as though they were using the same device and FltPlanGo in an actual aircraft.
FlightPro (free in Google Play; yearly subscriptions range from $6.99 a month to $149.99 a year)—This flight planning app, formerly known as Avilution's AviationMaps, has added new features, including split screen mode, geo-referenced flight charts, ADS-B and XM weather, and DUATS filing.
