ASA releases 2018 FAR/AIM

“The FAA can make changes to the regulations any time they want, all year long,” explained Snider, a helicopter pilot, who is responsible for getting ASA’s word out. He added that the agency also updates the Aeronautical Information Manual twice a year so ASA includes AIM updates with the current FAR edition in a combined reference manual. “We try to publish the FAR/AIM Series once a year, ideally before school begins,” and the 2018 edition will be “ready for students entering the fall semester.”

Snider reminded pilots that the Newcastle, Washington-based aviation publication house provides digital updates to the FAR/AIM throughout the year as regulations change. Pilots clinging to their 2017 edition are still covered. “Right now, there are updates for anyone who has a 2017 book and they can go to our website for the latest information.” The online updates are comprehensive so the update list “grows and grows” as the year goes on.

Snider said cartons of 12 white-blue-and-red FAR/AIMs tip the scales at about 36 pounds, meaning each 1,100-page book carries a potential three-pound dent to useful loads. Snider pointed out that the 2018 publication is also available in digital format for those with a portable electronic device, or for pilots keeping an eye on their weight and balance.

“You can download it and carry it around and save the weight, but it’s an iconic publication for your bookshelf,” Snider added as the tomes were loaded for sale at EAA AirVenture July 24 to 30 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Pilots attending the annual aviation convention and airshow can buy 2018 FAR/AIMs at ASA’s booth or from other ASA dealers. “We’ll have them available and on the shelf for anybody attending AirVenture at Oshkosh,” said Snider. “The timing for the update is great this year.”
