Garmin debuts new products at NBAA

Garmin is producing a new head-up display (HUD) and weather radar that will be launched on the Cessna Longitude as well as avionics upgrades for the used turbine fleet.

The HUD, known as the GHD 2100, will be linked with the G5000 avionics suite and display synthetic vision and other features.

"Our HUD will be tightly integrated with our head-down displays," said Phil Straub, Garmin executive vice president for avionics. "It's going to fuse a great deal of information and put it in the pilot's field of view."

The weather radar, known as the GWX 80, will predict threats such as lightning, hail, and wind shear.

Garmin is in the midst of a $200 million expansion at its headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. When finished, the upgrade will double the size of its aviation manufacturing facility to 750,000 square feet. It will also completely renovate the company's aviation business center when finished in 2020.

Garmin's modernization programs for used aircraft also are gaining traction. The company has installed about 30 G5000 avionics suites in Beechjet 400s.

A similar program to put G5000s in Citation Excel/XLS aircraft is moving ahead, and the first flight for the new system is scheduled to take place in December.

Garmin has completed 500 G1000 retrofits in King Air C90, 200, 300/350 models, the company said.

Garmin's Citation Mustang upgrade program will reach up to 470 airplanes and "keep those airplanes modern for the next 10 years and beyond," Straub said.
