Two new titles from Aviation Supplies & Academics take the drone enthusiast from building your own unit to comprehension of the regulations and how to operate safely in the National Airspace System.

The Droner’s Manual, by Kevin Jenkins, offers step-by-step guidance to build, program, test, and fly multicopters and fixed-wing radio-controlled aircraft. Jenkins, a fixed-wing pilot who was a UAV operator during deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, takes the reader through flight controller fundamentals, fail-safe features, flight testing, and flight operations. Numerous schematics and diagrams illustrate the construction of complex systems.

Jenkins touches briefly on the regulations for commercial and recreational use, but readers looking for a deeper dive will want to pick up The Complete Remote Pilot, by Bob Gardner and David Ison. Directed at the individual who wants to get a remote pilot certificate, the book provides straightforward lessons complete with review questions at the end of each chapter. Gardner, an ATP and former designated pilot examiner, has written numerous books for fixed-wing pilots, including Say Again, Please and The Complete Private Pilot Book. Ison is an associate professor of aeronautics for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and has 6,000 hours.

The Droner’s Manual is available in softcover for $19.95, as a PDF or eBook for $14.95, or an eBundle (softcover and PDF) for $29.95. The Complete Remote Pilot is available in softcover for $24.95, in PDF or eBook format for $19.95, or in an eBundle for $34.95. Order at ASA2fly.
