June 14 - The 2001 AOPA Sweepstakes Bonanza has been stripped! The Bonanza has no paint! The Bonanza is naked! After months of patiently sitting in the corner of a turbonormalizer shop, and an avionics shop, the Bonanza is going to be rewarded with a new set of clothes...um, I mean a new paint job.
As you read last week, Tom Horne's trip from Salina, Kansas, to the AOPA Fly-In and Open House in Frederick, Maryland, was quashed by some crazy Wx. So he turned the nose of N14422 south and landed at Houston-Southwest Airport, home of Murmer Aircraft Services.
Steve Tolson, who bought this established facility last fall, has taken charge of the Bonanza's exterior refurbishment. Tolson and his crew wasted little time removing the old paint, which was applied in 1977. All control surfaces flaps, ailerons, and ruddervators were removed during the stripping. This practice allows more complete paint stripping, and makes it easy to apply an even paint coat to the balanced control surfaces.
Doug and Teresa Kelly, a husband and wife team that travels the country installing Beryl D'Shannon modifications, will apply their expertise by putting in new side windows, and adding STCed aileron and flap gap seals.
We'll report on the Beryl D'Shannon modifications next week.
