May 11 - Even the compass is high-tech in the Sweepstakes Bonanza! But first, a project update.
When the J. L. Osborne wing tip fuel system was changed from the existing gravity feed system to a transfer system, the fuel selector had to be changed from a four-position (left tip, right tip, left main, and right main tanks) back to the original two-position (left main and right main) valve. The overhauled valve, obtained from Arrell Aircraft Sales was shipped to J. A. Air Center on May 8. The Beryl D' Shannon Speed Sloped windshield (tinted smoke gray) and the valve will be installed by the time you read this. Test flying will begin next week.
We're replacing the 35-year-old compass with a new TSO'd design from S.I.R.S. Product Services. The S.I.R.S. "Navigator" compass will be installed on top of the glare shield in the same position as the original compass. S.I.R.S. compasses are modern, lightweight designs featuring metal expansion bellows (to account for pressure and temperature changes) and tungsten carbide pivots. They are filled with a proprietary silicone fluid that dampens movement of the compass card.
The compass correction system has four corrector magnets to insure control across the entire azimuth range. The front surface of the bowl is spherical. This lessens distortion, cuts glare, and shows 170 degrees of the high-visibility card, making the compass easier to interpret from the pilot's or copilot's position. Similar S.I.R.S. compasses are used on Boeing, Airbus, and Bell aircraft. Blue/white lighting is available in 14 or 28-volt versions.
AOPA would like to thank the following companies that are donating or discounting their products and services to refurbish AOPA's 2001 Bonanza Sweepstakes project, or are otherwise assisting with the project.
