Oct. 25 - Now that the Sweepstakes Bonanza is back in Mineral Wells, Texas, Mike Keirnan and the S-Tec certification team are completing the FAA documentation required for a supplemental type certificate (STC) for the Meggitt electronic flight information (EFIS) system.
Some of the required tests involve human factors, avionics cooling, HERF (high-energy radio frequency), lightning interference, structures, EMI (electromagnetic), and RFI (radio frequency interference). Meggitt/S-Tec is busy preparing detailed procedures for complying with the regulations and advisory information governing the STC process. Some of these tests have been already approved during the Meggitt EFIS installation in The New Piper Malibu Meridian. Keirnan estimates that the flight tests will take 15 hours.
Since the Sweeps Bonanza is going to be front and center at AOPA Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, from November 8 through the 10, the Meggitt/S-Tec certification team has been concentrating on preparing for the tests. After the airplane returns from Expo, it will be transferred into the experimental category for the flight test phase of the STC process.
