Yes, ladies and gentleman, it’s that time of the year again. AOPA will host its annual fly-in and open house this weekend at the association’s Frederick, Md., headquarters. There will be hundreds of exhibitors showing off their products, and thousands of members will likely attend. Rod Machado will be entertaining the crowd, and there are seminars all day. But one of the biggest attractions will be this year’s sweepstakes airplane, the Get Your Glass Sweepstakes Piper Archer II.
Since late November of last year the sweepstakes airplane has been tucked away deep inside the shops of Oxford Aviation in Oxford, Maine, and Penn Avionics in West Chester, Penn. Now after six months of work, the sweepstakes airplane will make the trek to its temporary home to be shown off at the fly-in (the permanent one being the winner’s).
The paint, interior, and new engine were all completed when we showed off the airplane at Sun ’n Fun in April. But for fly-in, there’s a new twist—the instrument panel will also be finished. The glass transformation is complete.
Minor touch-up items still need some attention, but the airplane is more or less finished. Obviously we’ll continue to follow the developments on this site, and we’ll bring you up to date on what’s happened thus far. To further tease you, there will be no photos in the gallery this week. But if you want to see it for yourself, come to Frederick this Saturday to see the sweepstakes airplane in person. We’ll see you there!
