Palo Alto Airport of Santa Clara County is getting a second chance. During a recent county board of supervisors meeting, the board decided not to withdraw the county's airport operating lease with Palo Alto, the airport owner, when it expires in 2017. Santa Clara County operates three airports in California, including Palo Alto, and county aviation officials have claimed the airport loses money every year. The board established a six-month negotiation period with the city to come up with ways to make the GA airport profitable, like building more hangars to increase revenue, according to the "Palo Alto Daily News." The board also voted to raise the fuel flowage fee by 10 cents per gallon and the aircraft tiedown fee by 7.6 percent per year. "The Palo Alto Airport Association and Airport Support Network Volunteer Bob Lenox have worked tirelessly for months to protect the airport," said AOPA Vice President of Airports Bill Dunn. "Local support is the key to saving airports, and these pilots have taken the first step in saving their facility. They no doubt will also play an influential role during this six-month negotiation period in shaping a deal that will ensure the future viability of this critical bay-area airport."

Pilot Skip Gibbs regularly uses his Bonanza A36 to bring medical volunteers and supplies to remote areas of Mexico. Just before sunset, Gibbs was flying to the historic city of El Fuerte in the state of Sinaloa where LIGA International Flying Doctors of Mercy has been doing good works since 1934.
