Senior Editor Dave Hirschman and Photographer Chris Rose took the adventure of a lifetime last fall as they joined Aviat’s Stu Horn and 45 other adventurers flying 25 general aviation airplanes in the 3.3-million-acre Frank Church Wilderness Area in Idaho. The weeklong backcountry safari took a collection of Huskies, de Havilland Beavers, Cessna 172s, and Cherokee Sixes to the challenging airstrips situated along the rock-walled valleys carved by the Salmon River. See more of the incredible photography and watch an online video describing the trip.
We couldn’t ask for a better winner of the 2008 Get Your Glass Sweepstakes Piper Archer II. Karoline Amodeo, a 25-year-old private pilot from upstate New York, took home the airplane and stole our hearts. For a slideshow of photography from the giveaway and videos of the event, see AOPA Online.
OK, so you didn’t win the Get Your Glass Sweepstakes. Time to move on. Enter the 2009 Let’s Go Flying Sweepstakes to win a pristine 2005 Cirrus SR22. No refurbishment needed this time around; however, this aircraft will be a bit of a chameleon. See this online video and watch how the Cirrus changes its colors.
Editor at Large Tom Horne gave us a first look at Hawker Beechcraft’s King Air C90GTi in the June 2008 edition of AOPA Pilot. Now, in this exclusive online video, we get to take a flight in this power-packed turboprop.
Learn more about the challenges of high-density-altitude operations, flight planning, performance considerations, and mountain weather in “Mountain Flying,” an interactive online course from ASF.
In your copy of AOPA Pilot this month is an offering from the FAA—Runway Safety: A Pilot’s Guide to Safe Surface Operations (see page 73). Some of aviation’s worst accidents have happened on the ground. Learn how to avoid runway incursions. Read the booklet and view ASF’s interactive course, “Runway Safety.”
AOPA Senior Features Editor Julie Summers Walker joined AOPA in 1998. She is a student pilot still working toward her solo.
