The Air Up There
Mike Collins loaded up his camera and his notebooks to tackle a tough assignment in the New Mexico desert. He’d have to rise before the sun, look to the skies all day, and maybe even share a glass of mandatory champagne—when you cover the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, it’s a tough gig. In between the exhausting experience of recording the beauty of early morning hot air balloon ascensions and sharing the camaraderie of balloonists from all over the world, Collins captured the excitement and drama of hot air ballooning in this online video. www.aopa.org/pilot (keyword: balloon fiesta)

Senior Editor Dave Hirschman is a big fan of Van’s Aircraft—he’s the proud owner of a Van’s RV–3. So it didn’t take much coercing to get him in the air in the new RV–12 light sport aircraft with Van’s East Coast rep Mitch Lock. Mike Collins captures Hirschman’s experience in this online video.

Hot Air Balloon,
Aircraft Power and Fuel,
As the cold weather chills AOPA’s Headquarters in Frederick, many of us are inside generating new resources for flying clubs.
In my house, every Friday night is “Movie Night.” While the movies are rarely educational (I don’t think I learned anything from the Lego Movie), we look forward to the weekly opportunity to spend time together. Why not use the same concept for your Flying Club (with the addition of education, of course)?
The Aircraft Spotlight feature looks at an airplane type and evaluates it across six areas of particular interest to flying clubs and their members: Operating Cost, Maintenance, Insurability, Training, Cross-Country, and Fun Factor.
