AOPA is encouraging members to comment by April 6 on the impact of an FAA proposal to adjust the structure of three Victor airways that will be affected by the planned decommissioning of the Johnson County, Kan., VOR-DME.
On Feb. 21 the FAA issued a notice of proposed rulemaking to make changes to the airways using the navaid, which is located at the Johnson County Executive Airport in Olathe, Kan. The VOR is scheduled for shutdown in July as a result of performance interference caused by suburban encroachment into the navaid’s critical areas, and the deterioration of the building housing the VOR’s equipment.
“Approach procedures using the facility as the primary navigational aid have been cancelled while other procedures serving the airport are being amended to discontinue use of the facility,” it said.
The FAA has proposed to establish an intersection at the site of the VOR to preserve route lengths on airways V-10 and V-12 between Emporia, Kan., and Napoleon, Mo. Victor 508 would terminate 21 miles northwest of the navaid at RUGBB intersection, instead of at the VOR-DME.
AOPA is evaluating the proposal for its impact on general aviation, and encourages members to submit comments to the FAA and provide feedback to the association.
