As the FAA moves forward with the transition to a satellite-based air traffic system, AOPA supports changes that preserve access and efficiency for general aviation, and encourages users to comment on the impact of individual proposals.
Consistent with that objective, on March 5 AOPA submitted comments supporting the modification of three airways in the vicinity of Olathe, Kan., to accommodate the scheduled decommissioning in July of the Johnson County VOR (identifier OJC). Members may comment on the FAA’s notice of proposed rulemaking by April 6.
As AOPA informed members Feb. 23, the FAA proposes to establish an intersection at the site of the VOR to preserve route lengths on airways V-10 and V-12 between Emporia, Kan., and Napoleon, Mo. Victor 508 would terminate 21 miles northwest of the navaid at RUGBB intersection, instead of at the navaid.
“It appears the proposed modifications of existing Victor airways will largely mitigate the impact of OJC’s decommissioning, and AOPA supports the FAA’s proposed rulemaking,” wrote Tom Kramer, AOPA manager of airspace and modernization.
Kramer encouraged the FAA to continue providing a means for the public to comment on proposed airway modifications associated with the decommissioning of specific naviads.
