AOPA is reminding pilots who fly in New Mexico that a temporary military operations area (TMOA) will be in effect from April 7 to 20 in the southern part of the state, possibly limiting access to several airways during active periods.
AOPA reported in October 2012 on the Air Force plan to institute the Playas Temporary Military Operations Area in airspace from 300 feet agl to, but not including Flight Level 180, to support an annual training exercise. The TMOA covers an expansive area of the state, as it has in previous activations. AOPA shared the potential impact on airspace users with the Air Force in formal comments on the recurring TMOA.
During periods of activity, general aviation pilots are reminded to check notams frequently for active times, and to be prepared to use alternate routings in lieu of limited access to V66, V16, V198, and T-306.
