June 4, 1784 — Madame Elizabeth Thible, a French opera singer, becomes the first woman to complete an untethered balloon flight in order to entertain Gustav III of Sweden in Lyon.
June 6, 1925 – A car dealer covers himself in stamps worth $718 in a bid to be sent airmail from San Francisco to New York; the U. S. Post Office refuses to accept him.
June 10, 1989 — Capt. Jacquelyn S. Parker graduates from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base and becomes the first female U.S. Air Force test pilot. (below)
June 13, 1983 – Pioneer 10 becomes the first man-made object to leave the Solar System. It was the first spacecraft to travel through the Asteroid belt, and the first spacecraft to make direct observations and obtain close-up images of Jupiter.(right)
June 16, 1984 — Frontier Airlines pilot Emily Warner and co-pilot Barbara Cook make history by directing the first all-female commercial airline crew on a flight from Denver to Lexington, Kentucky
June 16, 1909 — Glenn Curtiss sells the first U.S. airplane commercially, the Golden Flyer, for $5,000 to the Aeronautic Society of New York.
June 17, 1928 – Amelia Earhart becomes the first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air when she accompanied Wilmer Lower Stultz and Louis Edward Gordon as a passenger aboard their Fokker F.VIIb/3m, Friendship. The orange and gold float-equipped three-engine monoplane departed from Trepassey Harbor, Newfoundland and arrived at Burry Port, Wales, 20 hours, 40 minutes later.
June 18, 1983 —Space shuttle Challenger STS-7 launches, carrying with it Sally Ride as the first U.S. woman in space. (top/above)
