Flying Club Connector Newsletter: December 2012

Our Flying Club Initiative

Story Photo AOPA's research has shown us that flying club leaders are hungry to learn more about the practical experiences of other clubs. So we have created this monthly e-newsletter to keep you connected with useful news, information, and good ideas from flying clubs around the nation.

Question of the Month

How do we build a better relationship with our local FBO?

Some full service FBOs may view clubs as competitors and a threat to income, particularly if a club has a flight training program or does its own maintenance. But there are a few simple solutions that can help ease tensions and build a good relationship that benefits both the club and the FBO. Patrick Timmerman, AOPA Sr. Technical Specialist, gives some ideas.

Monthly Poll

What internet scheduler does your club use?

Our surveys reveal that 83 percent of Flying Clubs use an online scheduler. In this month's poll, we would like to learn which scheduler you use.

By Steve Schapiro

Story PhotoFor pilots living in colder climates this time of year, the idea of a quick jaunt to a tropical island for a few days would be the perfect holiday gift. But you don't have to live where it's cold to take some R&R in a tropical paradise. The Bahamas is a year-round destination for two clubs are based at Page Field (MFMY) in Fort Myers, Florida. The Sundowners and the Fort Myers Flying Club hosted their latest Bahamas Fly-Out the weekend of the December 7th though 9th.

Winnebago Flying Club Uses Fall Foliage Footage to Tout GA

By Benét Wilson

AOPA recently created the AOPA Flying Club Network Facebook group, and one of the members—Sam Wiltzius (@wiredforflight)—sent a comment that turned into this post. The Winnebago Flying Club has been around since 1978, but wanted to do something in the area of new member recruitment and show people what they can do with a pilot certificate, said Wiltzius. With many memories of Door County, Wis., which has beautiful foliage, “I came up with the idea to fly over the foliage and do a video for … our club,” Wiltzius said. Watch the Winnebago Flying Club’s video on the blog.

Story PhotoWhen your flying club gets together for hangar flying sessions and safety meetings, there is likely a lot of story-telling from pilots who have "been there, done that." In flying, as with many things in life, it's a good idea to learn from the mistakes of others. The latest installment in the Air Safety Institute's (ASI's) Real Pilot Story series of videos helps pilots do just that, and is a must-see before flying this winter.
