Speaking From Experience: AOPA President Baker

AOPA President Mark Baker has first hand experience with flying clubs—he was a member of the Tailwinds Flying Club in Lake Elmo, Minnesota. He shares a bit of his aviation background from owning his first airplane, to the benefits and camaraderie he found as a flying club member.

Question of the month

What holiday events have been successful in bringing family and friends to your flying club?

We posted the “Question of the Month” on the AOPA flying clubs Facebook Group on December 12 to hear how you create camaraderie during the holidays. Here is a sample of what some clubs are doing this holiday season.

Monthly Poll

With holiday parties a traditional event for most flying clubs, we were wondering, how many social (non-flying) events your club does each year?

Last month we asked if you think your club will be around in 25 years. 61 percent of respondents believe their clubs will pass the test of time, while 39 don’t think so.

Debate Team. Drama Club. Flying Club? Oregon State Flying Club has its Roots as a Student Organization

The Oregon State Flying Club can trace its roots to 1942, even though it officially came into existence in 1952. Started as a student association of the university, it is still going strong more than 60 years later. Although the structure has changed (it is no longer a university club and its membership has expanded to include the neighboring Linn-Benton Community College), the mission remains the same—provide safe and inexpensive flying to the university communities. Club President Thomas Linder tells us all about it in this month’s Club Spotlight.

New Takeoff and Landing Video Series Latest ASI Offering

How often do you think about your takeoffs and landing techniques? Do you calculate takeoff and landing distances before your flight? When was the last time you practiced a short-field takeoff or landing? The Air Safety Institute's new video series begins with Takeoffs and Landings: Determing and Abort Point. With winter weather limiting flying opportunities, now is a perfect time to use the videos for your flying club’s next safety meeting.
