The FAA Regional Flight Surgeons are additional resources in the FAA Aeromedical hierarchy who are available to answer questions that Aviation Medical Examiners (AMEs) may have. They are also delegated by the Federal Air Surgeon to authorize Third-Class special issuances for many serious medical cases that would otherwise be deferred to the Aeromedical Certification Division in Oklahoma City. A call from your AME to the respective Regional office may result in a decision being made in a few days instead of several months.
