About AOPA Flying Clubs Initiative

As part of the You Can Fly goal of “more people flying more”, the Flying Clubs Initiative helps start, grow and sustain flying clubs, nationwide.  To date, emphasis has been placed on starting new clubs – through the provision of resources, presentations, and personal points of contact.

An equally important facet of the initiative is to grow and sustain existing clubs, in order to achieve an overall growth rate in club members, aircraft and flight activity.  In 2018, the group will start to provide resources and help to existing clubs – for example, help with marketing of clubs to attract new members, provision of prepared material for club meetings, recommendations for club events, and so on.

A group goal in 2018 is to organize and host “Meet and Greet” sessions with local clubs, in order to get to know clubs and members better, and to help develop resources and products to assist in their operations and growth.

  • Identify local clubs (with 100-miles of AOPA HQ) and create an ordered list of clubs
  • Create invitations and other marketing materials to promote the M&G sessions, clearly articulating the benefits for the club, its members and the AOPA Flying Club Network
  • Sort the selected clubs such that a mix of club types is represented at each M&G session
  • Develop the agenda for the meetings – to include (but not be limited to) – review of FCI plans and projects, discussion of desired products and help from FCI, training on running a club, training on running safety meetings, etc.
  • Work with appropriate AOPA staff members to develop material to meet the agreed agenda
  • Invite senior AOPA staff to introduce the sessions – and perhaps to socialize later in the day
  • Work with the marketing group to obtain sponsorship for the events, and to provide giveaways, discounts, etc. as extra incentives to attend
  • Attend to all other aspects to ensure success of the events
  • Organize and host the sessions
  • Create summaries of the events, capturing club requirements and desires
