AOPA sticks up for San Diego's Brown Field

General aviation airports are critical transportation resources that can't be left to deteriorate and close from neglect. That's why AOPA believes support for Brown Field Municipal Airport, located along the U.S.-Mexico border in San Diego County is crucial.

"The airport is underdeveloped. It needs a new FBO and local hotel, and it needs basic improvements to hangars and tiedown areas," said Bill Dunn, AOPA vice president of airports, who visited the field last week during an advocacy outreach effort to San Diego city and county officials. "With some work, it could serve as a key facility for pilots in that area flying to and from Mexico."

Dunn encouraged San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders' staff to support development of the city-owned airport. Currently, two proposals are being considered that will help speed improvements to Brown Field.

During AOPA's outreach to San Diego officials, Dunn also discussed the importance of continued improvements to other airports in the county, including Oceanside Municipal, Gillespie Field, and Fallbrook Community Airpark.

"AOPA must maintain close contact with airport sponsors and elected officials throughout San Diego County and build good relationships to ensure that our members have access to great GA airports in the area," Dunn said. "So far, county and city officials seem eager to work with AOPA to ensure that these airports are protected and properly developed."
