AOPA offers solutions to New Smyrna mayor

AOPA along with the Friends of New Smyrna Beach Airport is helping New Smyrna Beach protect its airport by resolving community concerns and educating neighbors about the importance of the airport.

In an April 30 letter to Mayor Sally Mackay, AOPA offered several recommendations to help the city work through noise issues related to the airport.

Among AOPA’s suggestions was creating a community working group to address noise concerns and map out recommendations for resolving them. AOPA also recommended ensuring that future development is compatible with the airport and educating pilots about voluntary noise abatement procedures.

“Mayor Mackay has said that the airport is here to stay, and we are happy to support her efforts to reconcile the concerns of the community with those of airport users,” said John Collins, AOPA senior liaison for airports.

The mayor is holding a town hall meeting about the airport on May 3 at the Brannon Center, 105 South Riverside Drive, from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Pilots are urged to attend.
