AOPA opposes curfew at Bob Hope Airport
AOPA is opposing some proposed restrictions on nighttime operations at Bob Hope Airport. The curfew, proposed by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, would eliminate takeoffs and landings between 10 p.m. and 6:59 a.m., with few exceptions.
“We have concerns about the impact the proposed curfew would have on surrounding airports,” said AOPA Senior Director of Airports Heidi Williams. “The Airport Authority is attempting to shift nighttime flights to an already congested neighboring general aviation airport, Van Nuys.”
In addition to the problems that an increase in operations and associated noise would have at Van Nuys, the airport is a poor choice for more traffic because it is in the midst of its own study that will likely result in proposed restrictions.
The few exemptions to the proposed curfew at Bob Hope Airport include law enforcement and fire fighting; emergency medical flights transporting patients or human organs; and aircraft with declared in-flight emergencies.
A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for Monday, May 12, 2008, at 6 p.m. at the Burbank Marriott Hotel, 2500 Hollywood Way, Burbank, Calif.
