Landsberg to advise on weather issues
AOPA Air Safety Foundation President Bruce Landsberg has been chosen to participate in a working group to advise the government on how to transform the way weather information is managed and applied in the NextGen air transportation system. He is collaborating with several government agencies, including the FAA, NTSB, and National Weather Service, on weather issues facing general aviation pilots.
Landsberg will provide his expertise to the Weather Working Group of the NextGen Institute, an organization created to provide the government with private-sector insight into the modernization of the air transportation system. The working group will develop strategies to provide pilots and other users of the system with more useful information on weather issues and to reduce air traffic delays caused by weather.
Landsberg brings a pragmatic perspective to the process as an active GA pilot who flies for business and pleasure.
“We need timely, accurate, and cost-effective technology to improve the GA weather safety record,” Landsberg said. “Super high-tech systems that no one can afford, are exceptionally complex to implement, and serve only a few won’t help the vast majority of GA pilots,” Landsberg said.
The NextGen Institute works in partnership with the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), which coordinates public-private cooperation in the effort to transition to NextGen technologies.
