Alaska airway revisions to take effect June 30

The FAA has issued its final rule amending the airways affected by the relocation of the Anchorage VOR in Anchorage, Alaska.

The VOR was recently upgraded to a Doppler VOR to enhance its capabilities, and relocated onto the Ted Stevens Anchorage Airport. The VOR’s re-designation includes changing its identifier to TED.

AOPA reported on March 10 on the FAA’s proposal to relocate the VOR because of the construction of wind turbines on Fire Island, the navaid’s former site.

In the final rule published April 28, the FAA noted “that the agency has not been involved in the decision process related to the wind farm’s location or funding. The responsibility of the FAA is to provide navigation aids to assure safe flight of aircraft, and this requires relocating the VOR.”

Fifteen low-altitude Victor airways and T-routes, and 14 jet routes and Q routes were affected by the action, which takes effect June 30, the FAA said.
