AOPA Airport Support Network

ASN Volunteers—Letters of Recommendation

Thank you for volunteering or nominating someone to help promote, protect, and defend your community airport through AOPA's Airport Support Network.

To complete the nomination process, nominees must submit one to two letters of reference. Here are some details and guidelines on submitting letters of recommendation:

What should the letters include?

(These are examples; not all are necessary.)

  • How the person making the recommendation knows the nominee and how long you have known the nominee.
  • Information on any pilot groups/associations to which the nominee belongs, if applicable.
  • A brief statement on how the person making the recommendation believes the nominee has helped/will help the airport.
  • A brief statement, if applicable, on the nominee's relationship with the airport manager, pilot groups, airport users, and flying clubs.
  • What kind of interest the nominee has in GA, the community, and helping to promote the airport.
  • Information on the nominee's aviation experience, if applicable.
  • If the nominee has relationships with public officials.
  • Bonus material would include the nominee's participation in other local community groups, organizations, or affiliations.

How can I submit a letter?

  • Letters do not have to be "formal," on letterhead, or even formatted! Simply send us an e-mail (asn@aopa.org), fax (301/695-2214), or snail mail to: AOPA, 421 Aviation Way, Frederick, MD 21701 Attn.: Kim Reed, ASN Program Specialist.

When can I expect to be appointed?

Once the ASN staff receives the nomination form and letters of reference, we send the nomination to the AOPA regional representative for your state for review. Then our internal staff reviews and confirms the appointment of the nominee. At that time, the nominee is sent a "Conditions of Appointment" form to read over, fill out and return to AOPA. Once AOPA receives the completed document, the nominee becomes the ASN volunteer! A welcome kit is mailed to the new volunteer, including a special shirt and hat, DVD, videos, and other tools and resources to help promote, protect, and defend your community airport. Information on how to contact the ASN staff is also included in your kit.

Thank you for your interest in joining your fellow AOPA members who have volunteered for the Airport Support Network!
