AOPA news from AOPA Expo 2007
AOPA execs take center stage in Hartford
The third and final General Session at AOPA Expo is traditionally about what AOPA is doing for you. And this year, top management presented initiatives and projects to keep the costs of flying in check, enhance safety, and improve communication resources.
Where will you land?
Aviation can't exist without airports. And communities can't remain vibrant if they cut themselves off from the rest of the world. Promote. Protect. Defend. AOPA Expo's second General Session on Oct. 5 was all about airports.
Pilots get a taste of Jet A
Get used to the sweet smell of kerosene. You should be seeing more light jets on your local ramp as the economies of scale drive down prices. Industry insiders kicked off AOPA Expo on Oct. 4 with the show's first of three General Sessions. The topic was on bigger, faster airplanes where pilots are stepping up from glass-cockpit pistons to jets.
AOPA presents prestigous Hartranft, Sharples awards
AOPA President Phil Boyer honored U.S. Rep. Jerry Costello (D-Ill.) and AOPA Airport Support Network volunteer Richard Beach of San Diego on Oct. 6 during AOPA Expo's closing banquet. Boyer recognized the two for their efforts to protect general aviation.
Learning to fly is better with a mentor
A breathtaking aerial shot of Mount Jefferson in eastern Oregon vividly illustrates "why I fly," AOPA Project Pilot spokesman Erik Lindbergh told a group of would-be pilots, student pilots, and mentors on Oct. 6. Setting aside the travails of commercial flight, with its long lines, flight delays, and security hassles, piloting your own airplane "is just cool," Lindbergh enthused.
Cardinal catches looks at Expo
AOPA's 2007 Sweepstakes Catch-A-Cardinal stole the show at AOPA Expo's aircraft display at Hartford Brainard. Pilots lined up to look at the 1977 Cessna 177B's new panel and leather interior and get a whiff of that new plane smell.
Pilots refresh safety knowledge at Expo; you can from home
Decision making. Flying single-pilot IFR. Using GPS. Radio communication. Thousands of pilots knocked the dust off these skills during safety seminars at AOPA Expo. The seminars, produced and hosted by the AOPA Air Safety Foundation, take a fun, informative, and interactive approach to make learning interesting. The newest seminar, "Regulations: What Every Pilot Should Know," is in its national run. Find out when it will be in your area. If you couldn't make it to Expo and missed these seminars, you'll soon be able to watch them for free online. Thanks to United Technologies, the seminars will be available for you to watch on AOPA Online starting the first week of November.
Bigger, better, newer, newest: Expo's exhibit hall has it all
If you were in the mood to climb into Cessna's SkyCatcher to check out the interior space, you could. But if your cravings lay more toward personal jets, the exhibit hall at AOPA Expo 2007 could accommodate you as well.
Aircraft on display at Expo run the gamut
Huskies, Mustangs, and Cubs are all corralled at AOPA Expo's aircraft display — tied, down, and open for inspection.
Expo visitors win flight bags
You never know when you're going to turn up a winner at AOPA Expo 2007. Dianne Lydelle-Jones of Arcadia, Indiana; Diego Fontayne of Monroe, New York; and Paul Berg of Manchester, Connecticut, each won a black leather flight bag from Sporty's, courtesy of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation. The foundation is giving away one flight bag on each day of Expo to an individual who has attended a safety seminar and registered to win a door prize.
Connecticut General Aviaton Week honors AOPA Expo
Connecticut State Aviation Administrator Steve Korta, an AOPA member, presented AOPA President Phil Boyer and members with a proclamation from Gov. Jodi Rell on Oct. 4. The governor proclaimed Oct. 1 though 6 General Aviation Week in Connecticut in honor of AOPA Expo 2007.
Aviation: The power to transform lives
With a bit of encouragement and a taste of the freedom of flying, aviation has the power to transform lives. Pilots, flight instructors, and journalists all play a part. Aviation humorist Rod Machado entertained AOPA members during Expo's opening luncheon with tales of training a student, whose father enrolled him in flight training in a last-ditch effort to keep his son out of reform school. Years later Machado saw the student, who had stopped flying with him after he soloed, in the right seat of a Boeing 737.

Boyer, Hartford mayor kick off Expo with ribbon-cutting
The "little airport that could," Hartford Brainard, is getting a boost, along with the city during AOPA Expo 2007, Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez said Oct. 4, welcoming hundreds of AOPA members. The mayor joined AOPA President Phil Boyer and Federal Judge Alfred Covello for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick off Expo and open the show's largest exhibit hall in history.
