As the weather cools down over much of the United States, southern destinations take on a lot of appeal for pilots. AOPA receives numerous calls this time of year about flying to Mexico. Many pilots are confused about the complexities of border-crossing procedures - and questions about eAPIS continue. Nevertheless, if the beaches of the beautiful Mexican resorts or some of the other Mexican attractions call you south, go ahead and give in to your dreams - just be sure to do a thorough trip preparation first. Pilots strongly urged not to fly Zodiac CH601XL, CH650
In the wake of a Nov. 6 accident involving a Zodiac CH601XL, the FAA issued a special airworthiness information bulletin recommending that before further flight the aircraft be brought into compliance with a forthcoming safety directive/safety alert from Aircraft Manufacturing & Design, which manufactures the airplanes. AMD will post the directive on its Web site.
Gulf of Mexico off-shore helipads to get AWOS
All Weather Inc. announced that significant milestones have been reached in the Gulf of Mexico relating to its work with ITT Corporation to supply 35 AWOS.

AOPA touts flexibility for Hudson River
AOPA responded to the FAA this week regarding its proposed rulemaking to improve safety in the Hudson River Class B exclusion zone. The association told the FAA that the rulemaking, together with other changes, effectively addresses safety concerns while considering the needs of airspace users.
Certain ground-based approaches critical for pilots
After reviewing the FAA's proposal to cancel 154 instrument approaches, AOPA is asking the agency to preserve 22 of those and consider comments from pilots on the necessity of 21 additional approaches.
Mexico grants extension to 406-MHz ELT requirement
The Mexican equivalent of the FAA, Direccion General De Aeronautica Civil (DGAC), has granted a six-month extension to the Oct. 1 deadline that would have required all aircraft flying in Mexico to be equipped with 406-MHz ELTs.
