FSS line goes down temporarily nationwide

Pilots who called flight service (800/WX-BRIEF) on the evening of Oct. 3 may not have gotten through. The phone system went down nationwide around 6:15 p.m. Eastern. It came back online around 7 p.m., some 45 minutes later.

Lockheed Martin officials said it had to do with an AT&T switching problem. AOPA is questioning why the backup system failed to kick in.
