Many AOPA members are surprised to find that their life insurance policy may not cover them in case of an accident when they are the pilot of a general aviation aircraft...and sometimes not even as a passenger in a commercial aircraft!
AOPA Aviation AD&D insurance provides Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) protection for the gap in coverage for both situations and is designed specifically to fit the supplemental insurance needs of AOPA members...general aviation pilots of all ages and levels of flying experience. Even student pilots.
Look at this checklist of reasons to purchase AOPA Aviation AD&D ...and enroll or increase your coverage now.

Is AOPA Aviation AD&D a Life Insurance Policy?
No. This plan is a supplemental policy designed specifically to provide accidental death and dismemberment protection for AOPA pilot members when they are piloting, riding, or instructing. (It is not intended to provide the same type or amount of coverage provided by general life insurance policies.)
When Can I Increase My Level of AOPA Aviation AD&D Coverage?
Within the first 90 days of enrolling as a new member or renewing membership as the policy runs concurrently with your AOPA membership. Coverage is now available up to $200,000. See all levels of AD&D coverage…
Does Coverage Extend to Passengers When I am the Pilot?
No. The policy provides coverage only for the AOPA member who has the insurance certificate for the plan. View AD&D Insurance Certificate for complete coverage details.
When And Where Am I Covered?
You are covered when the accident causing your death or dismemberment occurs while the aircraft is in, or en route between, the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii), Canada, Mexico (including Central America) and the islands of the Caribbean. View AD&D Insurance Certificate for complete coverage details.
Will I Be Required to Take a Physical Exam or Answer Medical Questions to Receive Coverage?
No. As an AOPA member your coverage is guaranteed with no need to take a physical exam or answer any medical questions. During the course of a dismemberment claim, however, it is possible that you may have to take a medical exam to process that particular claim. See Reasons to Purchase AOPA Aviation AD&D for further information.
