I only fly recreationally once or twice a month. Why do I need the Legal Services Plan?
Pilots who fly less frequently can find themselves unaware of subtle FAA rule changes and new regulations, making them more vulnerable to violations. In addition, the Plan provides you with valuable services you may need as a pilot, no matter how infrequently you fly, like reviewing your hangar, tie-down and lease agreements.
I already have an attorney that I trust. Will I need to use a different attorney if I enroll in the Legal Services Plan?
No, if you already have an attorney, the Legal Services Plan can reimburse your expenses based on a predetermined fee schedule. Or you may use an AOPA Panel attorney that specializes in aviation law. We have more than 700 aviation-qualified attorneys for you to choose from. The Plan pays Panel attorneys directly.
Legal services are provided through my union for work.
Do I still need AOPA's Legal Services Plan?
While many companies and unions protect their pilots while they are flying for business, this coverage often does not extend to a second job or recreational aviation. But a violation, no matter when it occurs, can impact your right to fly—and your career. Commercial Pilot and Airline Transport Pilot enrollment in the Legal Service Plan covers you every time you fly, both professionally and recreationally.
The IRS denied my aviation deductions—and they’re legitimate. Who can I turn to for advice?
The Legal Services Plan provides unlimited consultation with the Plan’s legal staff, including assistance for Federal income tax disputes. Our knowledgeable aviation legal staff is always available to work with you, or directly with your tax preparer, on these important issues.
Can I have someone look over my new aircraft lease agreement?
An AOPA Panel attorney can review your lease agreement. They can also be of assistance reviewing hangar and tiedown agreements.
I want to make sure my Legal Service Plan coverage continues. Do I have to enroll each year?
When we send you a renewal notice for your AOPA membership, we'll also include renewal in the Legal Services Plan. Include the fee with your membership dues for hassle-free renewal. Membership in the Plan runs concurrently with your membership, so it's easy to keep track of, and coverage won't lapse.
I used my own attorney to resolve a minor aviation issue.
