Stepping up to TAA could save you money on insurance
Purchasing or upgrading an aircraft with the latest gadgets and gizmos can satisfy your technology cravings and make flying easier. With the increased safety these devices provide, they may also help save you money on your aircraft insurance. Depending on the aircraft’s equipment and your proficiency, you could qualify for a 10-percent premium discount.
The basic requirements for a technically advanced aircraft (TAA) include the installation of IFR GPS, along with moving map and a two-axis autopilot. Additionally, two of the following five pieces of equipment are required to qualify as TAA:
- Terrain Awareness (TAWS, GPWS)
- Traffic Avoidance (TCAS)
- Wx Avoidance (lightning, datalink, radar)
- RNP Approach Capability (AIM 1-2-2)
- Fuel Totalizer.
Pilots then need to know how to use this technology to their advantage. The following need to have been completed within the past 12 months to qualify for the discount: an instrument proficiency check and completion of one of the five AOPA Air Safety Foundation courses below. Pilots need to recertify and complete the courses each year in order to qualify for the 10-percent discount.
If you’re looking for a good reason to get those new gadgets for your aircraft, lower insurance premiums could be one answer.
