Thousands of pilots unaware they are flying without insurance
Thousands of pilots who fly rented aircraft rely on the FBO to supply insurance in the event of an incident or accident. Unfortunately, the majority of these pilots don’t realize that the FBO’s insurance doesn’t protect them.
“The bottom line is that if you don’t carry your own insurance, you probably aren’t covered,” explained Brenda Jennings, AOPA Insurance Agency general manager. “The FBO carries insurance to protect its interests, not yours, and I hear from many pilots who are stunned when they get the repair bills after an incident. Even a minor ‘fender bender’ can be very costly.”
In fact, in many cases, the FBO’s insurance agency can go after the pilot to recover its own costs after a claim, so the bills can keep coming for months or years.
Pilots can protect themselves, their families and their passengers with affordable, comprehensive insurance from the AOPA Insurance Agency, usually available for considerably less than you pay for auto insurance. AOPA members receive a 5-percent discount, and pilots who maintain a clean flying record can also save with a 10-percent renewal discount.
“If you have an incident or accident, you have enough to worry about without wondering how much repairs will cost and whether the FBO’s insurance company will come after you,” said Jennings. “Insurance can give you peace of mind when you need it most.”
And should an incident occur, pilots can qualify for the AOPA Accident Forgiveness and Deductible Waiver Enhancement on select insurance policies. Simply participate in qualifying AOPA Air Safety Foundation safety education every six months to be eligible for the AOPA Accident Forgiveness and Deductible Waiver Enhancement. This valuable coverage enhancement waives part of the policy's deductible and—even better—prevents the policy renewal rate from increasing as a result of the accident.
When you purchase your insurance through the AOPA Insurance Agency, you get more than a policy. You also get the security of knowing your insurance is endorsed by AOPA, the name you trust to keep general aviation strong as a portion of revenues goes to AOPA to fund special GA initiatives that protect your right to fly.
