New enhancements to AOPA Online will no longer support Internet Explorer 6 or earlier, starting Oct. 1. AOPA will focus on developing new tools that leverage the expanding capabilities of the current and future generations of browsers.
Since the debut of Internet Explorer 6 more than eight years ago (see AOPA’s Web site at the time), many new technologies have emerged allowing AOPA’s ePublishing department to build powerful online tools like the AOPA Internet Flight Planner (AIFP) and enhanced weather interface. But the effort to make AIFP upgrades work on older browsers has dramatically slowed its continued development.
Currently, only 11 percent of AOPA Online visitors use Internet Explorer 6. As AOPA members continue to upgrade their browsers, operating systems, and hardware, this number will continue to decline. While everything currently on AOPA Online will continue to work in Internet Explorer 6, new enhancements may not function properly without a modern browser. AOPA will keep older versions of online tools available as long as possible. For example, AOPA members using Internet Explorer 6 can still use the online weather tool, but they will redirected to the former interface.
For those using Internet Explorer 6, free downloads for modern browsers are available. Upgrading to a newer browser will allow you to get the most value from AOPA Online. If you are using Internet Explorer 6 at work, consider requesting an upgrade from your company's information technology department. It also may be possible for you to run the portable edition of Firefox.
