Meet AOPA’s Kim Lee
She’s one of the cheerful voices you hear when you call AOPA.
If you’ve belonged to AOPA for any amount of time and you’ve called our toll-free hotline, chances are good that you’ve talked to Kim Lee who works in the Member Services Department. And if you have spoken to Lee, you’re in good company. That’s because Lee—just Lee alone, not the entire department, fielded 18,000 calls in 2010.
If you have a question about any aspect of AOPA membership, Lee can answer your question or route you to the person or department who can. Along the way, she’ll introduce you to other AOPA services that may be of interest.
For Lee, a native of Vietnam, customer service comes easily. Of the 34 years she’s worked for AOPA, she says, “I can’t wait to get out of bed and get to work. I have high energy and I love to help members and tell them the benefits of AOPA membership and the products AOPA offers.”
When some AOPA members hear her Vietnamese accent, they sometimes question whether they have reached an overseas call center and ask her outright. Lee laughs and says, “I tell them I’m right in Frederick and I am an American citizen and can prove it.” She says that exchange about her accent often breaks the ice so they can have a comfortable conversation.
Lee works from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. When she is not on the phone, she is doing data entry or giving members tours of AOPA headquarters. She says that Monday is her busiest days with calls, but the busiest day of all is a Tuesday when Monday is a holiday.
When not working, Lee enjoys ballroom dancing, with a specialty of the Argentine Tango. In fact, Lee starts each day before she comes to work with an hour of dancing. Her fiancé is also a dancer, but Lee believes she is the better dancer of the two and so her fiancé must sometimes remind her that he is the one who is leading!
Her job at AOPA is the only job Lee has ever had, and that’s fine with her. “I love my job,” she says, “and I want to stay with AOPA forever.”
